What an exhausting weekend.

Saturday I spent all day at a recruiting event aimed at getting more minority students to go to academic graduate programs. It was a fairly long day, as I left the house at 5:30 am, and didn't get back until 7:15 pm, but it was a very successful day all in all, so I'm not going to complain. Especially since I'm going to be taking Thursday off as compensation. And because when I got home I found out that Bryan had spent a decent part of the day adjusting the bookcase doors, securing the bookcases to the walls, and installing four more lights in the living room. Whadda guy, whadda guy! We ended up getting take-out Mexican food so I didn't have to make anything in my semi-comatose state. ;o) Mmmm…

Sunday I slept in – and I definitely needed it – while Bryan went to help Kevin move (apparently one of the people that was brought in to help them move broke the leg off of Kevin's piano, and almost broke the compressor in the refrigerator – ouch.). After I got up I studied my stats notes and worked some formulas until I really felt like I had them down pat. Our midterm is on Wednesday, so I also re-typed most of my notes (it's an open book, open note exam), which took a good three or four hours – and that's just the notes from the last three weeks of class! Afterwards we went to Ikea for the specific purpose of checking out their curtains and curtain rods. Did we end of buying anything remotely related to curtains? Not a chance. We did, however, end up buying another set of our dining chair slipcovers (these ones will, of course, be discontinued at some point, and we wanted to buy the set now for "the future."), a bath mat to wipe our feet on when we come in from the rain, and a leather care set for our couch. And I did manage to avoid the cinnamon rolls. Trip = success.

Getting up this morning at "7:00 am" when my brain really said "6:00 am" wasn't all that lovely, but it was made considerably better knowing that I can go home today and watch Emma, which I just bought on DVD for $9.99. How happy am I? Very.
So one of the professors came in with his little girl today for a while. His daughter is four years old, maybe? I went over to remind him that he had an appointment today with a prospective student I was courting, and he said that he might be a it late since he had to drop off his daughter with the babysitter since she couldn't take her in the morning. I said sure, that I'd occupy the student until he was free, and didn't think anything much of it, until I spoke to one of the secretaries later on who said "Gee, you think a woman could get away with saying that she was going to be late because of her daughter?" I have to say that I was taken aback – I honestly don't think a woman could say that without some derision or scorn by her male counterparts, even though this male professor was able to do it without a second thought. It's an interesting, albeit depressing, realization. And even more frustrating was accepting that I bought into it completely, since I didn't even think to ask whether I would have treated a female member the same way.
