Peeps, I spent a lot of time doing research, and Bryan and I decided to donate some money to the tsunami relief effort through Direct Relief International.
http://www.directrelief.orgHere's why:
- If you request it the money goes directly to the tsunami/earthquake relief fund
- They check out on give.org (they meet the standard for charitable accoutability)
- They have a very low overhead cost (about 1% - Unicef has 10%, American Red Cross has almost 20%)
- They area 501(c)3, and donations are tax deductible. They also send a receipt in the mail.
"Direct Relief International was established in 1948 and is non-sectarian, nongovernmental, and apolitical. All our programs are provided in a non-discriminatory manner, without regard to political affiliation, religious belief, or ethnic identity."
So if you're considering donating to a worthy cause and want to make sure that the place you donate to is really going to use the money for good purposes, please consider this or something like it. And now you don't have the excuse of having to find a good place to donate, so give a little bit, okay? Please.
