RE: BLOGGING I'm really surprised that so many people did not consider themselves bloggers in my last post. I wonder if my having posted that blurb about the lecture I'm going to above the question skewed the results. Because occasionally people ask me if I have a blog or if I'm a blogger, and I always answer yes. Probably it just means that I'm full of myself.

RE: THE SHOWER: I knew that having my mom and my mother-in-law jointly throw our shower would be interesting, and I sort of thought neither of them knew what they were getting into, but I had no idea how the friction would manifest itself. Well, this morning my MIL called Bryan to say how frustrated she was - and this was after the first real planning conversation. To put it bluntly, my MIL is all about casual entertaining for large crowds, and my mom feels that traditional is better, and though my mom means well, she tends to shoot down ideas if she hasn't had personal experience with them - for example she told my MIL that no one plays games at a baby shower. Oh, okay. If you say so. She also said no to every food idea my MIL presented other than cold cuts and rolls and whatnot, saying that people wouldn't like it. Oy. Unless someone point blank asks me to get involved I'm staying out of it and letting the two of them work it out on their own. I had enough of the negotiations with the wedding, and I just don't really care anymore.

Also, I wanted to check the dimensions of the changing pad we registered for last night so I hopped on line and imagine my surprise to find that even though inivtations haven't been sent out yet and something like six things have already been purchased from the registry. Could have bowled me over with a feather. If anyone is inclined, I'd love a critique of our registry (think we selected stupid stuff? too much practical, not enough fun things? are we just waaaaay off with thinking what we need?) at Target. It's under my name and we're in CA. If you don't know my full first/last name please let me know via email and I'll send you the info (ves.heill at gmail dot com). *ETA- In a response below I indicated the "big" things we were already given by various people.

RE: THE HOUSE: The room we need to complete to finish the interior of the house is the nursery. We'll be done with that as of next weekend, when we'll lay down the FLOR carpet tiles and put up the closet structure. It has been almost three and a half years of planning, purchasing, and physical work. We're not officially done with the house (we've still got to replace almost all of the doors in the house, each of which takes almost a full weekend, and a couple of things need paint touch-ups), but we're so incredibly close that I can taste it. We're finally putting together furniture that we've been storing for the last three or so years, and going through boxes that contain things we haven't seen since we packed them up in the apartment back in July of 2003. It's like sorting through treasure - books I'd forgotten about, decor items that I've been missing, old files and paperwork that I can shred due to obsoleteness... Soon. Soon we'll be done with this massive undertaking. And then I'm vowing to never, never rennovate again for as long as I live. Or at least for another year. Which ever comes first.

RE: HOW I'M FEELING: I know in reality I'm actually a tad-bit on the small side for being over 30 weeks pregnant, but I feel like a whale. Which is why I haven't posted any pictures for a long while. I look in the mirror, and the face looking back at me isn't mine. It's someone who looks sort of like me, but has acne and fat cheeks, and it wearing sort of funny clothes because nothing really fits right any more. Ah, well. Just over 9 weeks left.

Shower: i'm sorry but i'm laughing about the shower. hehe!

Registry: these are just things that we used that i didn't see. not that they are MUST HAVES though. just ideas.

swing~ we used a small portable one
pack-n-play
stroller
infant car seat (did you mention before that you got one?)
blankets
onesies~ we used a TON. but that was us.

House: can't wait to see pictures when it's done!

You: you know that we'd all love to see you all pregnant. :-)

[identity profile] ves-heill.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah - I should have probably written down what we already have:

crib
crib mattress
bassinett
swing
bouncer
stroller
infant car seat
PNP (though this is going to stay at my mom's house)
baby "gym" (2 types)

We were sort of thinking that people would give us more clothes and blankets than we registered for, because people seem to do that at showers. But think we should add more of those anyways? I do admit that Target's selections sort of stink in those areas...

[identity profile] nso313.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
it's hard to say. people LOVE to buy clothes but seem to hate to spend the money on the clothing that we really need like sleepers and onesies. they like to buy the cutsie wootise outfits that we never wear on our children because they look like they came right off of a minature poodle.

[identity profile] devil-kitty-1.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL @ the poodle comment.

WHY do ppl insist on buying stuff that is SO uncomfortable? I mean, if *I* wouldn't wear it because its uncomfortable, why in the world would I stuff my tiny baby, or poodle, into it?

[identity profile] ves-heill.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, we also have:

- diaper bag
- some cloth books/ and a whole box of children's books
- a handful of onesies/outfits for each 0-3mo, 3-6 mo, and a TON of 6mo+ stuff
- a botle drying rack
- a (used by my SIL) Avant Isis pump
- a few avent bottles w/disposable liners

[identity profile] devil-kitty-1.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
When you say handful, about how many? Because a handful won't get you too far unless you plan to do laundry every day. Between peeing, pooping, spitting, etc, you'll go through LOTS of onesies, sleepers and gowns.

[identity profile] ves-heill.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
around 5-6 each of the 0-3 mo. and 3-6 mo. sizes. I think we registered for about that amount as well, and I know that my mom and my MIL have been buying stuff for him - I just don't know what kinds/what sizes. Think we should add more? If yes, add more onesies, or more footed SNPs? Remember, it'll be late November, but the weather only gets down to around 50-60, and we love our heater...

[identity profile] devil-kitty-1.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
there were some days, early on, that we went through at least 10 "costume changes" per day. if you have -5-6, registered for more and think your mom and MIL have some purchased already, you're probably good.

I do not envy your shower sitch one bit. I hope they can work it out amongst yourself and leave the pregnant chick alone!

yourself=themselves

duh

Sorry to hear about the shower drama... I'll be curious to see how it all pans out! I think you entitled to step back and stay as relaxed as possible. :)

You are not a whale! You're SOCUTE! :)

[identity profile] 2happy4most.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Hopefully they will have the sense to leave you out of it - you're supposed to be enjoying this time, not stressing over negotiations!

Did you need an extra base or anything for your car seat? You already have most of what people register for, so hopefully people will stock you up on the extra sheets, clothes (and I totally agree with the PPs, what is it with people buying absurdly uncomfortable items for small babies?) and other essentials on your registry.

Not a whale. Not a whale. NOT A WHALE!

[identity profile] ves-heill.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. One car seat base came with the system, and I don't *think* we need a second, primarily because we're planning on using my car for most kid transportation... and also because it never actually seemed all that complicated to install the infact carrier with just the seatbelt. Maybe I was missing something, but I never could figure out why it was hard to line up th little leveling do-hicky and then just thread the seatbelt through to the receptical.

[identity profile] 2happy4most.livejournal.com 2006-09-19 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, it isn't that hard at all to use the seat belt to secure the seat. Most people I know who use 2 bases do it for ease because they are constantly shuttling the baby between 2 cars (drop off daycare with one car, pick up with the other).

Running off to read the latest fanfic (oy, I"m going to get in trouble at work)! Thanks!

Also, you must (MUUUUUUUST) read "Cursed" by Myth & Legend (http://www.phoenixsong.net/fanfiction/stories.php?psid=55) and "The Seveth Horcrux" by MelindaLeo (http://www.phoenixsong.net/fanfiction/stories.php?psid=599) if you're not doing so already. Tres fabulous fanfics.
