We just admitted someone to a Ph.D. program with full scholarship plus a VERY healthy stipend (and no teaching obligations attached). She's 18. And oh, did I mention? She's already been published in several peer-reviewed journals, has a shockigly good academic record, and is far too nice for someone who's only 18. But even so... she's still only 18

All I can say is that she's way the hell too young. She was too young to see The Goonies or Top Gun or Dirty Dancing at the movies. She never saw MacGuyver or Quantum Leap or even FraggleRock when they were on the air for the first time. She doesn't know who Gargamel is. She probably doesn't even know what Robotech was. She never sang "We Are The World" in school and probably never even cared that the cans of tuna she was eating may have snared innocent dolphins along the way. She doesn't remember when the Challenger blew up, and never heard those stupid "NASA stands for Need Another Seven Astronauts" jokes. She never used an ATARI or a Commodore 64. She probably never even had Superwoman Underoos. This makes me so sad. It's just not possible that she's getting a doctoral degree.

Ah, the 80s. It is rather sad to think of people who completely missed them. God, I was totally hooked on Robotech when I was seven!

I was, too. But I went back a few years ago when the Macross Saga was released on DVD and watched the first few episodes. I was SO LOST, lol. I only recognized Minmei (sp?).

I feel your pain.

I haven't heard of Robotech. :0

She most likely did not see Saturday Night Live with Dana Carvey. How sad.

Robotech was essentially a Japanese Anime tv show that became HUGE in the mid-80s. I don't rememebr how long it was on the air for, but what made it so interesting is that the stories were so complex! Not like regular cartoons where it was a half-hour story from start to finish and they never introduced new characters that lasted for more than 1 show. Oh, no. It was like a futuristic science fiction novel that lasted for months, full of back story and theories. And what made it so awesome was that it wasn't just Sci-Fi - there was romance, there was music (my brother listened to the soundtrack obsessively), there was humor, and there were (for the time) amazing graphics. And, if that weren't enough, there were three major time-periods that the overall story focused on, each having it's own characters, conflicts, drama, and resolution. Here's what Amazon says re: the first "series," the Macross Saga:

Plot Outline: An alien ship crashes on Earth and the tech and secrets it bears lead Earth into three destructive interplanetary wars.
Plot Synopsis: In the year 1999, an alien battle-fortress crashes on an island in the Pacific. Over the next ten years, mankind repairs and refits this fortress, using the advanced "robo-technology" found aboard it to create fighter planes that can transform into giant robots. As soon as the repaired fortress is ready for launch, the aliens to whom it belongs finally discover its location. Thus begins a series of wars that will devastate the planet earth. This television series was created by Carl Macek from three Japanese television series, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada.

It wasn't truly a "kids" show, which is why it's still a major collectible item today, they still sell the DVDs, and they have whole series of books. written about them. It, in a word, epic.

Um, Wonder Woman-- hello?! Andie wore my WW underroos for Halloween when she was 3, so she can never have such charges brought against her. :)

I'm curious-- what's she getting her Ph.D. in?

True, but since Andie didn't pick them out in the store herself it's not the same. ;)

My general rule is that I don't write anything online that can be overly identifying about where I work (I learned from Dooce.com, lol), and this particular degree isn't offered in too many places. I will say it's in adiscipline which generally falls under the Humanities. If you want more info email me and I'll send it to you privately.
